Unabridged Audio Books
An audio book described as unabridged is a complete cover to cover reading/performance of the whole book. Exactly as the author wrote it & intended the story to be read/heard.
Abridged Audio Books
An abridged audio book is a reading of a book with passages removed and with the focus more on the "action".
Media types:
CD Audio Books - The most popular and most expensive. An unabridged book can run to 25 CDs! If you listen in the car & have a CD auto changer, this is a convenient format.
Cassette Audio Books - Cassettes are durable. They are also usually about 25% cheaper than CDs and therefore represent excellent value for money. They also remember your place in the story - even if the cassette is removed from the player.
MP3 Audio Books - The latest format. MP3 audio books are now available, but they require (obviously) an MP3 player or computer to play them. They will NOT play on a standard CD player, although many newer CD players have the ability to play MP3s. They are often cheaper than CD titles & take up much less space making them ideal for collectors.

For children, audio books are a way to get children loving books from an early age. It is well known that children that read do better at school. When studying for GCSEs, many parents have realised how much listening to Of Mice and Men or To Kill a Mockingbird audio books can help in exam preparation.
